REGION CHAMPS! Softball Wins 2012 Region Title Over Glascock County

MACON, Ga.- Senior Jenna Byrd of the First Presbyterian Day School softball team (17-11, 6-1 Reg. 7A) blasted three home runs in three at bats and junior pitcher Caitlin Collins tossed a no-hitter as the Vikings claimed the Region 7A Championship 13-0 over the Glascock County Panthers on Wednesday night, October 3.

The region title marks the sixth in the last nine years for FPD.

The right-handed hitter Byrd homered in the first, second and third inning for the Vikings, all of which were to the opposite field. Altogether, the senior finished with six RBI’s on the evening.

Collins was equally impressive, striking out four hitters over four no-hit frames. The Viking defense played solid in the effort accounting for just one error.

FPD started the scoring with a Byrd three-run home run in the first. After Claire Crawford and Hannah Davis walked, Byrd sent Victoria Griswell’s 3-1 offering sailing over the right-center field fence for an early 3-0 lead. FPD would add on three more runs in the first to go up 6-0 after one inning.

In the second inning, the Viking offense was at it again. After Hannah Davis tripled to start the bottom half, Byrd stepped in and smashed a 1-0 pitch over the right field fence for her second round-tripper of the game. The Vikings would add on three more, including two runs on a double by Mary Micah Lee to set the score at 11-0 in favor of the Vikings.

The Vikings added on two in the third inning in the victory as well. One of those runs came from a Byrd solo-homer.

In the circle, Collins threw 10 first-pitch strikes to the 13 batters faced. The no-hit bid marks yet another impressive pitching performance from FPD this season. The Vikings have thrown three perfect games already this season.

With claiming the region title, the Vikings will advance to the GHSA state playoffs beginning on October 17. The opponent and time will be determined once all region scores have been reported. Stay tuned to www.fpdvikings.com for further updates.
