Softball Opens 2013 Season with Two Victories

MACON, Ga. – Head coach Jim Turner and the Lady Vikings knew the task of playing two higher classification schools to start the 2013 season would be tough.

The challenge was accepted, though, and the Lady Vikings did not disappoint, channeling their emotions to pick up two wins: an extra inning walk-off 9-8 win against Wesleyan and a run-ruling 13-1 rout of Rutland at Mercer University on Saturday, August 10.

Playing with the international rule* in the eighth inning, Wesleyan scored two runs, seemingly crushing the Vikings’ chances of winning its first two games of the year.

But then Jill Rogers stepped in to the batters box and quickly erased those thoughts.

Rogers, who was down to her final strike and the Lady Vikings down to their last out, drilled a game-winning, two-run double to left field to earn the walk-off victory.

“It was great to get a test like that early on,” head coach Jim Turner said. “We knew they (Rutland and Wesleyan) would be good teams and we knew we would have to bring our best.”

Throughout the day, FPD scored 22 runs and tallied 20 hits on timely hitting.

“The offense was so good for us today,” Turner said. “We are making contact and finishing our swings, making our hits get into the outfield.”

Freshman pitcher Carli Sutton picked up both victories in the circle. In game two of the day against Wesleyan, Sutton allowed seven runs, five of which were earned. Against Rutland, she pitched a one-run masterpiece, scattering three hits as the Vikings run-ruled the Hurricanes.

“She (Carli) kept her cool and kept throwing strikes,” Turner said. “She kept her poise and kept locating the ball.”

The Lady Vikings return to the diamond on Tuesday, August 13, traveling to play at Northside High School at 5:30 p.m.
