Football Wins on Homecoming vs. Hancock Central

MACON, Ga. – A 28-point fourth quarter propelled the FPD football team (4-3, 3-1 Reg. 7A) to its third straight win, a 41-8 decision over the Hancock Central Bulldogs (3-4) on Homecoming.

“It was a great Homecoming,” head coach Greg Moore said. “The scoreboard reads 41-8, but the game was still undecided late. Our kids did a great job of getting over the hump.”

A close game at 13-8 in the fourth quarter, the Viking offense punched in a score and within a two-minute span, the defense forced the Bulldogs into committing three costly turnovers, all of which were returned for touchdowns.

O’Showen Williams’ 76-yard touchdown return and Jam Morris’ 66-yard pick-six highlighted FPD’s defensive attack in the fourth quarter. A three-yard fumble recovery and touchdown return by Barron Jones would give the Vikings their final touchdown of the game.

“I can’t say enough about how we’re playing on defense,” Moore said. “We were patient, hung in there, did what we were supposed to do and things fell into place for us.”

The Vikings jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter when Ryan Lindsey registered a 14-yard touchdown at the 2:50 mark.

FPD scored again in the second quarter on a Will McCormick quarterback keeper, giving the Vikings a 13-0 led.

Hancock Central bounced back for its only score of the night, a 44-yard pass from Montkevious Fluellen to Markel Jones with 3:11 to play in the first half.

A scoreless third quarter was all the inspiration the Vikings would need to set the stage for a scoring outburst in the fourth.

“We were clutch on defense,” senior Caleb Samuel said. “We just did what the coaches told us to do all week (in practice) and it worked out for us.”

FPD was out-gained in total yards 312-294, but its overall team play down the stretch that secured the win.

“They (Hancock Central) have a really physical team and we knew it would be tough,” McCormick said. “We are just trying to do our own job as a team and when that happens, we get it done.”

McCormick led the squad in rushing, totaling 78 yards on 24 carries. Williams hauled in 100 yards on five receptions to the lead the Viking receivers and McCormick was 11-for-17 passing, throwing for 157 yards.

The Vikings edged out the Bulldogs in first downs 16-15 and forced seven penalties.

“We feel really good about how we’re doing things,” Moore said. “We’ll enjoy this one for a little while and get ready for Wilkinson County next week.”

The night was a memorable one at the school, as FPD held its annual Homecoming. Alumni, family and friends all gathered prior to and during the game to reminisce and socialize on a night that honors the proud tradition of the Red & Black.

“It’s a great night for our school,” Moore said. “I’m proud of our school, proud of our team, and thrilled to have all of those alumni back with us.”

The Vikings return to action on Friday, Oct. 25, traveling to play Wilkinson County in a Region-7 game in Irwinton. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
