Softball Drops Elite Eight Opener to Brookstone

COLUMBUS, Ga.  – The FPD softball team (20-9) dropped the opening game of the GHSA Elite Eight 3-1 to the Brookstone Lady Cougars on Thursday morning at the South Commons Softball Complex.

The loss forces FPD into the losers bracket and sets up an elimination game on Friday morning against Darlington at 9 a.m. after the Lady Tigers fell to ELCA 16-3.

“We weren’t able to get much going off their pitcher,” head coach Jim Turner said. “When we had people in scoring position we were just unable to get them home.”

Down 1-0 for the majority of the contest, the Lady Vikings tied the game in the sixth inning when Brookstone’s catcher sailed a throw over first base on a Caitlin Collins ground ball that scored Jill Rogers.

The Lady Cougars quickly pounced back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a Taylor Roos RBI single and a FPD error to seal the win.

Helen Snavely picked up the win for Brookstone in the circle, scattering four hits and striking out six while FPD’s Carli Sutton took the loss allowing one earned run on five hits and fanning seven Lady Cougars.

FPD committed three errors on the day while Brookstone accounted for one miscue.

Sumner Carlton led the charge for FPD at the dish respectively, tallying two hits. Brookstone had five different players record a hit.

“The hits that we did have were good,” Carlton said. “We definitely need to tighten down on our defense. We let the other team get ahead on some errors that we committed.”

FPD’s game is a much anticipated one against Darlington on Friday.

The Lady Tigers defeated FPD in the 2012 GHSA State Playoffs in three games at the FPD Softball Complex.

“It was a tough loss last year against them (Darlington) in the playoffs,” Carlton said. “We want to face them again.”

Added Turner: “Everyone is in a good frame of mind,” Turner said. “We are looking forward to our matchup against Darlington.”
