Girls Hoops Drops to Wilco. in Region Tourney Finals

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The FPD girls basketball team (16-8) fought hard, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a tough Wilkinson County Lady Warrior team in the GHSA Class-A Region-7 Tournament Championship game, falling 58-30 at Aquinas High School.

“Not a lot of things went right for us tonight,” head coach Charley Chase said. “We didn’t play well offensively or defensively. You can’t afford to do that against a good team like Wilkinson County.”

Senior Savannah Phillips scored 13 points, the only Lady Viking to notch double-figures in the contest.

FPD trailed 17-3 at the end of the first quarter and 29-14 at halftime.

Wilkinson County saw three players score double-digits, led by the 18 points of Lyric Jordan. Ngozie Ware dropped in 17 and Asia Smith scored 12 points, respectively.

Despite the loss, Chase said he is proud of the girls.

“To make back to back trips to the region tournament championship game speaks volumes of these ladies,” Chase said. “The result is not what they wanted, but to be here is an accomplishment.”

FPD will graduate three seniors in Phillips, Caroline Stroud and Lizzie Lisenby.

“We couldn’t be where we are today as a basketball team without those girls,” Chase said. “I’m very proud of them.”

The regular season was a memorable one for FPD. The Lady Vikings finished with a winning record for the third consecutive season as a member of the GHSA.

Phillips also eclipsed the one-thousand point mark for her career in FPD’s first round region tournament win over Warren County on February 11.

The FPD Athletic Department sincerely thanks the Class of 2014 for their hard work and dedication throughout the years.

The Lady Vikings will now await word from GHSA on qualifying for the state tournament.
