Baseball Knocks Off Rutland and Southwest on Senior Night

MACON, Ga. – After a 5-3 loss to Warner Robins at Turner Field on April 21, the FPD baseball team regrouped on Wednesday night, besting Southwest 12-2 followed by a 6-5 comeback win over Rutland in eight innings on Senior Night.

Marshall Lyles drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth on a single, scoring Bo Fricks to lead the Vikings (15-6) to the win.

“We played well at the end of the game,” head coach Jim Turner said. “It was nice to get these two wins for our seniors on senior night.”

K.J. Spears (2-0) took the win in relief for FPD.

Lyles fand Tyler Stubbs finished the night with two RBI’s each. Fricks and Spears scored twice for the Vikings, who have won two straight.

FPD led 4-0 after two innings, but Rutland answered back with three runs in the third and two in the fifth to take the lead. The Vikings tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 5-5.

“It was great to see us manufacture those runs late,” Turner said. “We will need more of that moving forward.”

In the early game, FPD handled Southwest with ease, winning 12-2.

The Vikings scored nine runs in the second and outhit the Raiders 10-4 in the game.

Stubbs led FPD at the dish with two RBI’s while Jake Peavy recorded the win on the hill.

The Vikings now turn their attention to Aquinas on Friday, April 25. A win would give FPD the Region-7 Championship and a guaranteed spot in the GHSA Class-A State Playoffs.

“It’s a big game for us,” Turner said. “(Aquinas) is a good team, but so are we. We are excited about this opportunity.”

First pitch in Augusta is set for 5 p.m.
