FPD’s Katherine Strickland Invited to American Legion Session

MACON, Ga. – After attending Georgia Girls State at Georgia Southern the week of June 8 – 16, rising senior Katherine Strickland is one of two girls from Georgia selected to attend 68th Annual American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation Session to be held in Washington, D.C, July 19-26. The selection was made by the American Legion Auxiliary based on Strickland’s scholastic ranking and interest in learning more about our American systems of local and state government.

At the state level, the girls focus on responsible citizenship and study local, county, and state government processes. At Girls Nation in Washington, D.C., the focus will move to the federal level. Participants are called senators and participate in mock senate sessions complete with caucusing and debating bills. Topics range from personal to political interests. Campaigns are held to elect party officials, a Girls Nation President and Vice President. The Girls Nation President is invited to attend and speak at the American Legion Auxiliary National Convention later in the summer.

In addition to their legislative forums, the senators hear distinguished guest speakers and visit the Pentagon, Arlington National Cemetery, the White House and memorials in the Washington, D.C. area. Their visit to Capitol Hill includes meetings with their state senators and representatives. A highlight of the week is the opportunity to meet the President of the United States.

“We are extremely proud of Katherine,” said FPD College Counselor Brad Thompson. “This is a great honor for her that is well-deserved. Katherine exemplifies outstanding citizenship and scholasticability. She will represent FPD and Macon very well.”

Strickland is the daughter of Lucia and Jay Strickland of Macon and was sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 3.
