Softball Blasts Mount de Sales in Region Opener 15-0

MACON, Ga. – FPD head softball coach Jim Turner knew the start of region play would be exciting.

And his Lady Vikings (4-5) fulfilled that excitement on Thursday night, run-ruling the Mount de Sales Lady Cavaliers 15-0 in three innings at the FPD Softball Complex to open up Region-7 play with a win.

“It was a great night for us,” Turner said. “We played much better defense than we had in prior games and we got timely hitting throughout the lineup.”

That timely hitting was evident via the bat of junior Caroline Harrison, who ended the night going 3-for-3 with five RBI’s.

Her biggest moment of the contest, though, came in the second inning.

After an Allie Parkerson single and a Courtney Lawrence walk, Harrison stepped in and sent Summer Nepveux’s 1-2 offering over the left-center field fence for her first career home run to give the Lady Vikings an 8-0 advantage.

“I just wanted to get my teammates in,” Harrison said. “I got a pitch I could hit, put a good swing on it and drove through the ball.”

FPD scored five runs in the first before Harrison’s big blast in the second. The Lady Vikings also added six more in the third to claim the run-ruling victory.

Sophomore pitcher Carli Sutton (4-4) picked up the win for FPD in the circle. The righty struck out four batters while allowing just two Lady Cavalier hits on the night.

“We played solid all the way around,” Turner said. “We needed a win like this to start region play on the right foot.”

Harrison said the team can keep its winning ways going by taking one game at a time.

“We just have to keep our confidence up and stay positive,” Harrison said. “No matter who we’re playing we have to have that same mindset going in that ‘we can win this.”

Harrison also noted that importance of solid defense as the season progresses. FPD was averaging nearly three errors per game prior to the victory over de Sales in which it had one mishap.

“We’ve been working a lot in practice on defense,” Harrison said. “We’ve been trying to get back to where we were last year in making the smart play instead of forcing things.”

Lizzie Reed added two RBI’s for FPD at the dish, while Lawrence scored three runs.
