Softball Snaps Skid with 16-8 Win Over Peach County

MACON, Ga. – The FPD softball team (2-2) ended its two-game losing streak on Thursday night, defeating the Peach County Lady Trojans 16-8 in five innings.

“Our bats came alive in this one,” head coach Jim Turner said. “We put the bat on the ball, put it in play and came out on top. That was the difference.”

The Lady Vikings jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Already up a run with a runner on third, senior Courtney Lawrence stepped up to the plate and sent Erica Colwell’s 1-0 offering over the left-center field fence for her first home run of the season.

“I just finished my swing,” Lawrence said of her home run. “Coaches have been telling me to finish my swing in practice and I was able to do that in that at-bat.”

FPD’s offense wasn’t done there, though, plating 10 runs in the third inning. Two of those runs came across on a Jill Rogers single to give FPD a 5-1 advantage.

“A lot of our players had some great at-bat’s in the game,” Turner said. “We have to keep putting the ball in play and putting pressure on other defenses to make plays.”

The Lady Trojans didn’t back down, however. Peach County scored three runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to keep the pressure on FPD’s offense.

Lawrence said the team kept it’s momentum and focus despite the punches from Peach.

“We had momentum at the plate and we wanted to keep that,” Lawrence said. “Everyone

Turner says the squad needs to keep its offensive momentum going and tidy up the defense heading into the weekend tournament at Mill Creek on Friday-Saturday.

“We have four big games coming up,” Turner said. “We are heading in the right direction.”

Maggie Renfroe drove in four runs and had three doubles on the night. FPD pitcher Carli Sutton (2-1) picked up the win in circle, tossing 3.2 innings and striking out four.

Caroline Harrison put the run-rule in effect for FPD, driving in the game-winning run on a single to left field in the fifth to score Amanda Evans.

The Lady Vikings return to play Friday night, August 15, taking on Norcross High School at 6 p.m. followed by a game against Winder-Barrow at 8 p.m. Both games are part of the Mill Creek Tournament and will be played the Flowery Branch Complex No. 3.
