Football Tames Twiggs Country Cobras 55-28

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ga. – The FPD football team picked up its second consecutive win on Friday night, Oct. 31, claiming a 55-28 decision over the Twiggs County Cobras at The Pit.

The win gives the Vikings (6-3, 3-2 A Region 7-A) the third seed from sub-region A heading into next week’s GHSA Region 7-A cross-over game on Nov. 7. FPD will travel to GMC Prep in Milledgeville at 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs upset Hancock Central 12-6 to secure the third seed from sub-region B.

“This was a big win for our football team,” head coach Greg Moore said. “We came out and got off to a great start and were able to play the entire way through.”

Part of the reason the Vikings had such a complete game was due to the play of running back Jam Morris, who returned after last week’s unfortunate instance at FPD’s Senior Night pep rally and was forced to miss the game against Wilkinson County.

But Morris returned with a bang, scoring five touchdowns on the night and rushing for 129 yards on five carries.

“It was neat to see a senior who has worked hard like Jam do something like that,” Moore said. “All of the players were cheering for him, especially after what happened last week.”

It wasn’t just Morris, though. Robert Johnson picked up two touchdowns on the night along with one touchdown by Dontrez Johnson.

“A lot of kids did good things tonight,” Moore said, who witnessed his Vikings improve to 3-0 all-time against Twiggs County. “We can’t have that big of a night without a bunch of folks doing those great things.”

Quarterback Will McCormick led FPD in passing, completing 6-of-13 passes with three touchdowns and one interception. Morris led the Vikings in receiving, bringing in three catches for 94 yards.

The Vikings started the game on a 21-0 run with three straight touchdowns by Morris, two of which came from McCormick’s arm.

After a Tez Brown touchdown to get Twiggs on the board late the first quarter, Morris struck again on a 39-yard run within the first minute of the second quarter to give the Vikings a commanding 28-7 lead.

Johnson followed nearly four minutes later with an eight yard touchdown run to put the Vikings ahead at 35-7.

Both teams would score three more times in the second half before the game ended in FPD’s favor.

Moore said the Vikings will keep looking to improve as the season progresses.

“We’re going down the home stretch,” Moore said. “We’ll keep doing what we’ve been doing. The kids believe in our season.”

Kickoff against GMC Prep in Milledgeville is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at historic Davenport Field.

The Vikings defeated the Bulldogs earlier this season 62-21 and lead the all-time series 7-0.
