Volleyball Takes Second at Area Tournament

MACON, Ga. – The FPD volleyball team (21-18) advanced to the finals of the GHSA Class-A Area-2 Tournament on Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 win over Mt. de Sales in the semifinal round, but dropped the title match to Brookstone 2-1 in three sets to capture the tournament runner-up.

The second place finish, however, guarantees a first round GHSA State Playoff match at home on Thursday, Oct. 16 against a team to be determined.

“We played good at times,” head coach Sarah Futo said. “We just couldn’t contain a very good Brookstone team. We were a bit too inconsistent.”

The Lady Vikings were led by the seven kills of Abigail Pierce and the five blocks of Kate Patterson in the championship match against the Lady Cougars of Brookstone.

Against Mt. de Sales and the Lady Cavaliers, the Lady Vikings picked up a 26-24 victory in the first set but dropped the second set 23-25, forcing both squads to go into a deciding third set in which FPD would win 25-12.

“It was an exciting day for all the teams,” Futo said. “We were able to push through to get to that Championship match. We just fell a bit short.”

Pierce finished with 10 kills and Patterson notched four kills and two blocks against de Sales. Mikayla Mobley totaled 10 digs and Morgan Mullis posted three digs.

The Lady Vikings have advanced to the GHSA State Tournament all three years since becoming an official varsity sport in 2012.

“We continue to play hard and get better,” Futo said. “It’s a new season in the state playoffs and anything can happen. Our girls are excited about what’s ahead.”

Opponent and time of Thursday’s first round match will be announced in the coming days. Check www.fpdvikings.com,@FPDVikingSports, FPD Athletics on Facebook, and the FPD Volleyball Home Page for further updates.
