Boys Basketball Conquers Brookstone 44-34

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The FPD boys basketball team (4-11) snapped a six-game skid on Saturday night, knocking off the Brookstone Cougars (2-18) 44-34 at Illges Gygmnasium in non-region play.

Freshman Champ Dawson netted 13 points in the Viking victory. Teammates Maurice Gordon chipped in with eight points and Titus Moore notched seven points.

“This was a great win for our team,” FPD head coach Michael Walton said. “Any time you can go on the road and get a win, that’s a good thing. We had some guys step up when we needed them to.”

The Vikings led 12-11 after the first quarter and held the Cougars to five points in the second quarter while scoring 11 to take a 24-16 lead into the locker room at halftime.

“We were able to cause some misses and put some pressure on their guys,” Walton said. “I was pleased with the way we responded throughout the game, especially on the defensive end.”

FPD closed out the win in the fourth quarter, outscoring Brookstone 15-11.

“We know we are a young team, but that’s still no excuse,” Walton said. “Our guys keep battling hard when we need them to and tonight we were able to close out with a win.”

The Cougars were led by the 12 points of Hudson Terrell. Andrew Butcher dropped in seven points.

Brookstone drained six 3-pointers on the night, four coming from Terrell while FPD finished with five 3-pointers. Jacob Oates led the Vikings from downtown, hitting two from long range.

“We just have to keep getting better,” Walton said. “Tonight was a good step in that direction.”

The Vikings return to play on Tuesday night, Jan. 27, hosting the Mt. de Sales Cavaliers in Region 7-A action at 7:30 p.m. at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center.

FPD fell to Mt. de Sales 51-45 on Jan. 9 at McAuley Hall.
