Girls Basketball Drops Region Match to Stratford 40-23

MACON, Ga. – The FPD girls basketball team raced out to an early first quarter lead, but couldn’t hang on as the visiting Stratford Academy Eaglettes knocked off the Lady Vikings 40-23 on Tuesday night, Jan. 6 in Region-7A action at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center.

Kate Patterson and Sydney Reese paced the Lady Vikings (2-7, 1-1 GHSA Reg. 7) with eight points while the Eaglettes (11-3, 2-0 Reg. 7A) were led by the 19 points of Sydney Reese.

“I thought we came out with a good mindset,” FPD head coach John Griffin said. “We played at a good pace, but Stratford is a good team that can expose weaknesses in a hurry. They did that the rest of the game.”

The Lady Vikings amassed 20 turnovers in the contest mainly due to the constant Eaglette full court press. Stratford outscored FPD 37-17 over the final three quarters of play.

“Coach (Ed) Smith has a good team and we knew they would bring the pressure in the backcourt,” Griffin said. “We’ll have to just keep getting better as a team.”

FPD dropped in two 3-pointers on the night while all of Stratford’s scoring came off the 2-point field goal.

Both squads struggled from the free throw line. FPD finished the night at 5-for-14 (35.7 percent) while Stratford posted a 12-for-22 mark (54.5 percent) from the charity stripe.

FPD trailed 17-9 at halftime, but a 14-3 run by the Eaglettes to begin the second period proved to be too much for the Lady Vikings to overcome.

“We’ll go back to practice on Wednesday and work on some of the things we didn’t do well tonight,” Griffin said.

The Lady Vikings return to action on Friday night, Jan. 9, traveling across town to face another local rival in the Lady Cavaliers of Mt. de Sales Academy.
