Jones’ No-No Propels Vikings Past Glascock 9-0

GIBSON, Ga. – FPD hurler Sam Jones tossed a no-hitter as the Vikings (8-2, 3-2 Reg. 7-A) defeated the Glascock County Panthers (3-6, 1-4 Reg. 7-A) 9-0 in five innings on Friday night, March 13, in GHSA Region-7 action.

“What an effort by Sam and all of our guys,” FPD head coach Denny Bryant said. “We are really proud of him and our defense for stepping up like that tonight. Everyone was outstanding.”

As Jones was mowing down hitters, FPD’s offense was heating up as well.

Will McCormick, Tyler Stubbs and Austin Cox each had two RBI’s for the Vikings, who improved their winning streak to two games.

“Those guys got us some runs across when we needed them to,” Bryant said. “Right now we’re getting some timely hitting when we really need it and it showed during tonight’s game.”

The Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, the final run of the frame coming on a McCormick double that brought home Cox.

FPD added another run in the third inning when McCormick tripled in Austin Cox to give the Vikings a 4-0 advantage.

“We set the table on offense and defense tonight,” Bryant said. “Any time you can do that, you give yourself a really good chance to win the ball game.”

FPD put the game out of reach in the fourth inning, scoring five runs on five hits to push the lead to 9-0.

“That fourth inning really helped us know that we were in control,” Bryant said. “We put some great swings on the ball.”

Still, though, tossing a no-hitter in the game of baseball is an accomplishment rarely witnessed at any level of play.

Doing it twice in one season is almost unheard of.

But the Vikings have done just that. And Jones has been an integral part of both.

FPD’s last no-hitter came on Feb. 21 in a 10-0 victory over Southwest High School at Ben Harden Memorial Field in a combined no-hit effort from Jones and Kevin Moreau.

On Friday night, it was just Jones, who finished with six strikeouts while walking just two batters.

“It’s really special to do something like that at this level,” Bryant said. “Sam will always remember that and so will his teammates. We’re proud of him and our entire team.”

The Vikings are back in action on Monday, March 16, traveling to Rutland High School in Macon for a non-region game at 5 p.m.
