Lady Vikings Slide Past Stratford 2-1 while Boys Fall 8-0

MACON, Ga. – The FPD Lady Vikings (9-3) scored two goals in the final five minutes of regulation on Tuesday night to defeat the Stratford Academy Eaglettes (5-3) 2-1 at Spencer Frank Hays Field.

“What a wild finish,” FPD head coach Josh Trieste said. “Both teams played really well tonight and thankfully we were able to get a couple to go in when we needed them most.”

That finish Trieste mentioned is one that will be remembered for quite some time.

After the Lady Vikings tied the match at 1-1 on a goal by Elizabeth Nelson, Jane Howell powered a shot toward the Eaglette goal that deflected off a player and into the net resulting in an own goal and a 2-1 Lady Viking lead.

“I don’t think that’s how we drew it up necessarily, but we’ll take it,” Trieste said. “That’s one of those things that happens in this game.”

The Eaglettes led for the majority of the match, striking for their only goal in the first period from Karlyn Suggs and taking a 1-0 lead into halftime.

“It was a grind the whole game,” Trieste said. “We just wanted to stay in it and our girls did just that.”

Lady Viking keeper Caylee Ann Sutton notched one save in the winning effort. Sara Robertson picked up an assist for FPD on the goal by Nelson.

In the boys match, the Vikings (6-5-1) struggled against the Eagles (7-3) in an 8-0 loss.

FPD trailed 3-0 at intermission before allowing five Eagle goals in the second period.

Both soccer teams return to the pitch on Friday night, March 27, traveling to Irwin County High School.

Kickoff for the girls match is at 6 p.m. with the boys to follow at 8 p.m.
