Stubbs Powers FPD Baseball Past GMC Prep 6-1

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Tyler Stubbs was 2-for-4 and finished with a game-high four RBI’s as the FPD varsity baseball team (7-2, 2-2 Region 7A) snapped a two-game losing streak, knocking off the GMC Prep Bulldogs (5-3, 3-3 Reg. 7A) 6-1 at Craig Field on Thursday night, March 12, in GHSA Region-7 play.

“It was nice to see our guys respond like we did tonight,” FPD head coach Denny Bryant said. “We got some key offense late and our pitching was solid all night.”

Stubbs put the Vikings ahead for good in the sixth inning on a single to left field that scored Marshall Lyles. Gavin Bloodworth later hit a sacrifice-fly to make it a 2-0 Viking lead.

“It was a welcome sign for sure,” Bryant said. “We’ve struggled the past couple of games to manufacture some runs and we were able to keep battling tonight late into the game.”

The Bulldogs plated their first and only run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth when Lewis singled home Sheffield to make it a 2-1 Viking advantage.

But Stubbs and the Vikings responded with key insurance runs in the seventh.

Stubbs smacked a double to plate Lyles and Bo Fricks to push the Viking lead to 4-1. FPD would add two more runs in the inning as well.

FPD southpaw Kevin Moreau (3-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Vikings, tossing 5.2 innings and striking out seven.

“We got some great work from Kevin tonight on the mound,” Bryant said. “He was under control, threw strikes and gave us a chance to win.”

“We got great play from all of our guys,” Bryant added. “Anytime you can snap a losing streak, that’s obviously a good thing.”

The Vikings return to action quickly, traveling to Glascock County for a Region-7 game on Friday, March 13, at 5:30 p.m.
