Vikings Shutout Wilkinson County 9-0

IRWINTON, Ga. – Kevin Moreau tossed six innings of shutout ball as the FPD Vikings (10-2, 4-2 Reg. 7A) rolled to a 9-0 victory over the Wilkinson County Warriors on Tuesday afternoon, March 17.

“We got some great innings from Kevin today,” FPD head coach Denny Bryant said, who saw his team claim their fourth straight win. “Our pitching has been really good lately. Our guys keep throwing strikes and are relying on the defense to make plays for them.”

The Vikings jumped out a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Tyler Stubbs hit a sacrifice fly to plate Marshall Lyles followed by an Austin Cox single that scored Bo Fricks.

“It was nice to see our guys jump on them early,” Bryant said. “We got a lead and were able to add to it throughout the game.”

The Vikings added another run in the top of the second when Fricks reached on a Warrior error to score Lyles.

FPD tacked on one run in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning as well.

“We were able to slowly pad our lead today throughout the game,” Bryant said. “Our guys are playing with a lot of confidence right now.”

The Vikings scored three more times in the top of the seventh inning, the first run coming when Lyles doubled in Garrison Hotchkiss. Fricks then singled to drive in Sam Jones to extend FPD’s lead to 8-0.

The final run of the contest came three batters later when Daniel Weaver reached on an error to bring home Lyles to give the Vikings a 9-0 commanding advantage.

“We’re playing together as a team right now,” Bryant said. “We’re getting timely hitting and great pitching. Let’s hope that continues.”

The Vikings return to play on Thursday, March 19, traveling to Southwest High School. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.

The Vikings defeated Southwest 10-0 on Feb. 21 at Ben Harden Memorial Field.
