Softball Downs Stratford in Dramatic Fashion, 7-6

MACON, Ga.  – The FPD varsity softball team (9-1, 3-0 Reg. 7A) erased an early 5-0 deficit en route to a dramatic come-from-behind 7-6 win over the region rival Stratford Academy Eaglettes (10-3, 1-1 Reg. 7A) on Thursday night at the FPD Softball Complex.

Down 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lady Vikings tied the game on a Caylee Ann Sutton single that scored Jill Rogers.

Then, with the score knotted at 6-6, Amanda Evans smashed a double to plate Caylee Ann Sutton for the game-winning walk-off double.

“It was just such a rush,” Evans said after the game. “I just trusted that we would do our best and at the end of the game we saw which team wanted to win more.”

“I felt like God was really working with us during that game,” Evans said. “He helped lead us to victory.”

Carli Sutton (4-0) picked up the win in relief for the Lady Vikings, who pushed their winning streak to seven straight.

“It was a tremendous effort by our players to stay in the game mentally,” FPD head coach Jim Turner said. “We had clutch hitting when we got down and in the seventh Amanda came through for us.”

The Eaglettes jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning but the Lady Vikings responded with two runs in the bottom half. The first came on a Peyton Worsham double that plated Culver and the second on a Rogers fielders choice.

“Those two runs in the bottom of the first were big in the long run,” Turner said. “They have a really good team and getting those two helped ease our nerves a bit.”

The Lady Vikings kept chipping away, though.

In the fourth, FPD added a run on a fielding error by Stratford and two more runs in the fifth inning when Rogers drove in Worsham followed by an Ochs RBI single.

“The determination we had to keep fighting was amazing,” Turner said. “This was a hard-fought game by two great teams.”

The Lady Vikings out-hit the Eaglettes 9-6 on the day.

FPD is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 1, hosting Bleckley County High School.

First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
