Girls Hoops Posts 51-41 Win Against Monroe Area on Day Two of Jones County Christmas Tourney

GRAY, Ga. – The FPD varsity girls basketball team (6-4) responded nicely on the second day of the State Bank Holiday Classic at Jones County High School, defeating the 4-A Monroe Area Lady Hurricanes (6-6) 51-41 at the Greyhound Gymnasium.

FPD quickly snapped its one-game slide after yesterday’s loss to Lamar County. The Lady Vikings will now play on Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. against the winner of the Central/Dublin game.

“I thought we played a lot more under control in this game compared to yesterday,” FPD head girls coach John Griffin said. “The girls responded well and did what we asked them to do. I’m proud of them for responding in a positive way.

The Lady Vikings jumped out to a 15-11 first quarter lead and led 34-20 after outscoring the Lady Hurricanes 19-9 in the second quarter.

“We got some big baskets in that second quarter and our defense was able to pressure them into turnovers,” Griffin said. “That was nice to see, especially playing as early as we did today.”

Emma Lako and Kate Patterson paced FPD in scoring, posting 20 and 19 points, respectively.

FPD also caused 23 steals. Nine of those steals were credited to Patterson. She also tallied eight rebounds and four assists.

“Kate and Emma are certainly special players,” Griffin said. “But our whole team feeds off of them. When they get it going, it opens more opportunities for others to get involved. Everyone did their job this morning.”

The Lady Vikings took fairly good care of the basketball, only turning it over 17 times, three less than its season average.

FPD improved from Monday’s free-throw debacle (7-of-24) against Lamar County. On Tuesday morning, FPD finished 10-of-18 from the charity stripe.

“It’s nice to get a win and to do it with a lot of girls playing,” Griffin said, “We were able to get some of the younger players in the game towards the end and get them some real varsity experience.”

Tip off for Wednesday’s finale is set for 1 p.m.
