Lady Vikings Snap Two-Game Slide with 50-41 Road Win at Brookstone

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The FPD varsity girls basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 12, defeating the Brookstone Lady Cougars (2-5) 50-41 at Illges Gymnasium in non-region play.

The win gives FPD a 6-3 series advantage over the Lady Cougars after both teams split both regular season games last season.

“I am really proud of our girls,” FPD head girls basketball coach John Griffin said, “This is one of those that we needed to get and we did. After last night (against GMC Prep), we told them that they had to get back to playing more team-oriented basketball, and I think we did that tonight.”

FPD was led by three players in double-figures.

Bailey Ruble scored a team-high 15 points on five made 3-pointers while Sydney Reese totaled 11 points and one 3-pointer. Kate Patterson notched an impressive double-double with 10 points and 18 rebounds.

“The girls did what we have been asking them to do all season in today’s game,” Griffin said, “We got out in the fast break, made our layup opportunities, made our free throws when we needed them and played mentally smart.”

Another main key for FPD’s success was taking care of the basketball. The Lady Vikings only committed 14 turnovers, over ten less than their season average of 24.5.

“That’s certainly something to be proud of,” Griffin said. “A lot of those turnovers came early too, when were getting into the flow of the game.”

The Lady Vikings led 25-18 at halftime and closed out the final 16 minutes on a 25-23 run to end the game for the win.

Brookstone’s Naeisha McClain led all scorers with 25 points while draining three 3-pointers.

Molly Lee had a solid showing for the Lady Vikings, finishing with two points, five rebounds and one steal off the pine. Altogether, FPD finished with 10 steals. Ruble also swatted away four shots.

“We played well on both ends of the floor,” Griffin said. “We haven’t really done that for an entire game this season.”

FPD out-shout Brookstone 5-4 from behind the arc. The Lady Vikings also capitalized from the free throw line, hitting 16-of-24 tosses to the Lady Cougars’ 3-of-6.

The Lady Vikings will have nearly a week off for midterm exams before returning to action Friday night, Dec. 18, hosting the Schley County Lady Wildcats.

Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center.

FPD fell to Schley County last season 52-34 in Ellaville, Ga.
