Vikings Fall in Jones County Christmas Tourney Semifinals to Central 70-43

GRAY, Ga.  – The FPD varsity boys basketball team (6-2) dropped its semifinal game in the second day of the State Bank Holiday Classic at Jones County High School to the Central High School Chargers (10-2) on Tuesday afternoon.

The loss sends FPD to the loser’s bracket. The Vikings will play the loser of the Jones County/Harris County game on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at 5:30 p.m. to round out the tournament.

“I thought we played scared for much of the game,” FPD head boys basketball coach Michael Walton said. “We didn’t take good care of the basketball early and you can’t do that against a good team like Central. Hats off to Coach (Andre) Taylor and his kids. They came out and got the job done.”

The Vikings trailed 21-7 at the end of the first quarter and 39-13 at halftime.

“All credit has to go to them because we got outplayed tonight,” Walton said. “Our guys just need to learn how to come out and play stronger with more energy while taking better care of the basketball.”

The second half was indeed a positive sign for the Vikings, who were only outscored 31-30.

Maurice Gordon led the Vikings in scoring with 14 points while Armaun Smith totaled 13.

The Chargers had three players in double figures, led by the 14 of RaKwon Iverson. Kentrevious Jones totaled 12 points and Antarius McCoy droped in 11 points as well for Central.

The Chargers out-shot the Vikings from behind the arc, hitting five 3-pointers to FPD’s 4. Central also capitalized on free throws, knocking in 18-of-23 from the free throw line.

“I think our guys will respond fine, but we needed to be shown our weaknesses so we can get better as a team.”
