Strong First Half Leads Vikings to 45-39 Region 7-A Win at Mount de Sales

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity boys basketball team (13-7, 5-3 Reg. 7-A) won their second straight game on Tuesday night, going on the road to defeat the Mount de Sales Academy Cavaliers (8-12, 2-5 Reg. 7-A) 45-39 at McAuley in GHSA Class-A Region 7-A play.

The win gives FPD the season series over Mount de Sales 2-0 and pushes the GHSA era series to 3-1 in favor of the Vikings.

“It was an all around team effort,” FPD head boys coach Michael Walton said. “We knew we needed this win coming in here and our guys came out and executed when they had to. I’m proud of them for that.”

Henry Middlebrooks certainly executed, especially from behind the three-point line.

The sophomore drained six 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 18 points, 15 coming in the first half, to lead the Vikings to victory.

“Henry got hot and his teammates fed off of him really well tonight,” Walton said. “This was the first night in a long time that we shot the ball well from the outside. Henry was definitely a reason for that.”

The Vikings led 14-12 at the end of the first quarter and pushed the lead to 26-16 after outscoring the Cavaliers 12-4 in the second quarter.

Both squads would match each other point-for-point with 11 in the third frame to send the game to the fourth quarter with FPD leading 37-27.

The Cavaliers came out on a 5-0 run to start the fourth quarter and cut the lead to five at 37-32.

But the Vikings would respond, finishing on an 8-5 run to take the win.

“Coach (Jim) Massey does a great job with his team,” Walton said. “They are always ready to play and really scrappy. I thought both teams played hard tonight.”

Armaun Smith finished with nine points for the Vikings while Reggie Gantt netted seven.

The Cavaliers were led by the 15 points of Garrett Thomson.

FPD hit as many 3-pointers (7) as it did 2-pointers (7) in the contest.

Both teams struggled from the foul line. FPD finished 10-of-22 while Mount de Sales went 6-of-17 from the charity stripe.

“Out guys played hard and that’s what I’m proud of,” Walton said. “Hopefully we can keep this momentum as we wind down the regular season.”

FPD returns to action on Friday night, Jan. 29, in a key Region 7-A match-up at Tattnall Square Academy.

The Vikings knocked off the Trojans 51-47 at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center back on Jan. 12.

Tip-off for Friday’s contest is set for 8 p.m. at Tattnall’s Athletic Center Gymnasium.
