Baseball Opens 2016 Season with 2-0 Shutout Over Coahulla Creek

MACON, Ga.  – The FPD varsity baseball team (1-0) started its 2016 season on the right foot on Thursday afternoon, capturing a 2-0 shutout victory over the 3A Coahulla Creek Colts (0-1) at Ben Harden Memorial Field in non-region play.

The Vikings used timely hitting and dominant pitching to earn the win.

“I’m really proud of the guys for the way they played today,” FPD head coach Denny Bryant said. “I’m sure a lot of them had some first-game jitters, but we were able to put that aside and pick up the win.”

After two and half scoreless innings, the Viking struck first in the bottom of the third when Garrett West singled home Tee Turley for a 1-0 lead.

“That was a big hit for us,” Bryant said. “To get on the board first is always good and I think it helped ease our minds a little bit.”

After a scoreless fourth and retiring the side in the fifth, the Vikings scored what proved to be the final run of the contest in the bottom half when Ryan Jones scored on a wild pitch.

Austin Hartley (1-0) picked up the win for the Vikings on the mound tossing three inning, allowing one hit and striking out three. West earned the save, his first of the young 2016 campaign. Gavin Bloodworth started the game and pitched two scoreless frames while fanning three batters.

“I thought all three of our pitchers threw the ball well tonight,” Bryant said. “They threw strikes and trusted the defense behind them to get the job done.”

The Vikings were out-hit 4-3 but Coahulla Creek committed two errors while FPD played flawless in the field.

“This was a great way to begin,” Bryant said. “Let’s hope we can carry this momentum into Saturday’s double-header on the road.”

That twin-bill is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 20 at Lake Point. The Vikings will take on Pace Academy at 2 p.m. followed by The Paideia School at 4:30 p.m.
