Senior Kicker Brad Powell Signs a Letter of Commitment with Mercer University

MACON, Ga. – FPD football senior Brad Powell will continue his collegiate kicking career in his own back yard.

Powell signed a letter of commitment with Mercer University on Thursday morning, Feb. 18, inside FPD’s Middlebrooks Athletic Center in front of the student body, faculty and staff, administration, family and friends.

“It feels great to finally sign and to be a Bear,” Powell said. “I’m feeling gracious to God and just really happy for the opportunity. I’m very thankful for my parents, family and everyone at FPD who have helped me along the way to get where I am today.”

Powell’s numbers certainly speak for themselves.

During his four year career as a Viking, Powell made 115 PAT’s, averaging nearly 29 per season. The total number of extra points places him first on the all-time list at FPD for a career. During his senior campaign, Powell was also 37-for-38 in PAT’s.

On field goals, Powell hit 11-of-15 attempts overall and was 4-for-6 in his final season as a Viking. With his 11 made career field goals, Powell now stands in a tie for second all-time.

In kickoff’s, Powell was 59 percent on touchbacks, placing him first in Class-A according to MaxPreps in touchback percentage at 26-for-44 in his senior season.

Along with his stellar stats, Powell racked up numerous awards off the field as well.

He received a Macon Touchdown Club Special Teams Player of the Week, a 13WMAZ Ortho Georgia Scholar Athlete of the Week, was named into the Rising Senior Georgia Junior Bowl. He was also named Second-Team All-State by the Georgia Sportswriters Association.

“A lot of perseverance and hard work have gone into what Brad has accomplished,” FPD Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Greg Moore said.

Moore also noted Powell’s work ethic.

“What people don’t see are the hours he put in by himself to get to where he is today,” Moore said. “I think that speaks volumes of the type of person and teammate Brad is. We’re really excited about his signing of this letter of commitment and hopefully this is the first of many rewards for him as he moves on to Mercer.”

Added Powell: “I’ve been taught to work hard at FPD and put God first. That will definitely carry over to college as those are the tools I have learned here at FPD. I believe in myself and look forward to the opportunity.”
