Vikings Drop Final Regular Season Region-7 Contest at Wilkinson County 70-52

IRWINTON, Ga. – The FPD varsity boys basketball team (13-9. 5-5 Reg. 7-A) dropped its final Region-7A contest of the 2015-16 season on Tuesday, falling to the Wilkinson County Warriors (18-5, 9-1 Reg. 7-A) 70-52 at The Palace on Tuesday night.

The loss gives the Warriors the seasons series 2-0 and keeps Wilkinson County undefeated all-time against the Vikings 8-0.

“I thought our guys battled for the majority of the ball game,” FPD head coach Michael Walton said. “I can’t fault them for that. We just made too many mistakes in the third quarter and we didn’t match their physicality. I think that proved the difference in the game. Hats off the Wilco. They are a great program lead by Dr. Geter and earned the win.

FPD led after the first quarter 15-12 but trailed at halftime 25-23 after the Warriors responded with a 13-8 in the second quarter.

“We felt good coming out down by just two to start the second half,” Walton said. “But Wilco. started to play really physical and we didn’t match that. That’s still part of the growing process of our young team.”

The Warriors created separation in the third frame, going on a 23-11 run over eight minutes to enter the fourth quarter with a commanding 48-34 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Warriors outscored the Vikings 22-18 for the win.

FPD’s Armaun Smith netted a game-high 22 points while Champ Dawson finished with nine points.

The Warriors totaled three players in double figures, paced by the 14 of Greg Cousin. Larry Jones and Ontario Coats finished with 13 and 10, respectively.

“We’re still learning and I definitely think we’ve grown up as this season has progressed,” Walton said. “We just have to keep wanting to get better and I know our kids do. We have to learn how to do the little things and respond the right way.”

FPD will look to end its two-game slide on Friday night, Feb. 5, for the final regular season game at ELCA.

“We still have some work to do and feel like we’re in a pretty good place for the Region Tournament, something we didn’t qualify for last season,” Walton said. “We’re beat up right now and hopefully we can get some guys back to make a postseason run.”

The opening tip is set for 8:30 p.m. in McDonough, Ga. on Friday night.
