2016 VIKING CUP CHAMPS! Lady Vikings Claim Eighth Title in Program History

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity girls soccer team (3-0-1) added another trophy to its already impressive program resume on Saturday night, winning the 2016 Girls Viking Cup over the Veterans High School Lady Warhawks 2-1 to claim its eighth Viking Cup in program history.

To get to the championship match, FPD had to overcome Augusta Prep early on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Vikings did just that in a 1-1 draw, scoring a goal in regulation by Elizabeth Nelson and advancing on penalty kicks 4-3.

“I’m proud of the girls for fighting to the end of the August Prep match,” FPD head coach Josh Trieste said. “Scoring with a couple of minutes left really showed our ability to fight to the end. And it was great to have Caylee Ann (Sutton) come up big in grabbing a save in the penalty kick shootout.”

In the finals against Veterans, FPD faced a deficit of 1-0 after a goal by Veterans’ Myrnda Wyatt.

But the Lady Vikings fought back just as they did early on Saturday.

Maggie Johnston tied the match at 1-1 with a goal followed by a game-winning score by Jansyn Samples with 14 minutes to play off an assist from Emma Lako.

“Down 0-1, senior Maggie Johnston came through with a great left-footed corner that went in,” Trieste said. “We had two nice goals actually called back for offsides but the girls didn’t quit.”

“Emma Lako found Jansyn Samples for the game-winner,” Trieste added. “I was proud of our team and they played like a veteran team today. I am excited to be a part of this group and looking forward to what the future holds for our team.”

FPD knocked off West Laurens as well on Friday night 8-1.

The Lady Vikings are back in action on Wednesday, March 9, opening Area-2 play at St. Anne Pacelli.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Columbus, Ga.
