Baseball Rallies Late for 3-2 Region Victory at Tattnall Square

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity baseball team (14-7, 5-3 Reg. 7-A) snatched away a victory from the Tattnall Square Academy Trojans (15-6, 7-1 Reg. 7-A) on the road Tuesday night, scoring three runs in the top of the sixth for a 3-2 Region 7-A win.

Down 2-1, FPD’s Jack Sawyer singled home Mac Grice and Ryan Jones for the game-winning hit and FPD pitcher Garrett West slammed the door over the final two innings to earn the victory.

“This was a big region win for our baseball team,” FPD head coach Denny Bryant said. “I’m very proud of how our guys competed for seven innings.”

“We had several players step up in clutch situations,” Bryant said. “Gavin (Bloodworth) took a line drive off of his foot in the first inning but stayed in the game and battled 2.1 innings before he couldn’t go anymore and Garrett West came in for relief to hold Tattnall scoreless for 4.2 innings. And of course the big play tonight was Jack Sawyer’s two run single. That was obviously huge.”

The Trojans struck first in the bottom of second for a 2-0 lead. Blake Simmons tripled to center field to bring home Jacob Dooley and Nick DiPonzio.

The game would remain scoreless until FPD’s heroics in the top of the sixth.

The Vikings first got its first run of the contest when Ryan Jones reached on an error to score Kenneth Langston, who was serving as a courtesy runner in the inning for West, who also reached on an error to make it a 2-1 Tattnall advantage.

After a Bo Fricks groundout and Bloodworth strikeout, it was up to Sawyer with two runners in scoring position to deliver.

And did he ever. Sawyer smashed a single to center field off Cory Barthlomew to plate two runs, the final the go-ahead run scored by Jones.

West then took care of business on the mound the final two innings as the Vikings claimed the win.

“These guys are figuring out what it means to compete with confidence,” Bryant said. “We are not quite where we need to be consistently, but I am very proud of these guys tonight. To battle back against the no. 1 team in the state with a DI pitcher on the mound is very encouraging going into the Region Tournament.

And that’s when FPD will return to action, with the first opponent, time and place to be determined on Monday, April 18.
