Boys and Girls Golf Take Second at GHSA Class-A Area-1 Private Tournament at Healy Point

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity boys and girls golf team teed it up on Tuesday morning and throughout the afternoon at the GHSA Class-A Private Area-1 Tournament at Healy Point Country Club.

Both squads finished in second place, resulting in a trip to the GHSA Sectional round, scheduled for May 2. The Vikings will play at the University of Georgia course in Athens, Ga. while the Lady Vikings will hit the links at Lane Creek Golf Course, also in Athens.

“I’m proud of the way our guys and girls competed today,” FPD head coach Charley Chase said. “There is a lot of stellar competition every year at this tournament. Healy Point did a great job in helping us host and everyone gave it their best shot out there.”

The Vikings shot a team score of 305, 14 strokes behind the Area Champs of Brookstone (291). FPD will be joined at Sectionals with Savannah Christian (322) and Stratford (323).

FPD was led in scoring by Wesley Hanson, who shot a 1-over 73 and was named All-Area in fourth place overall. Charles Stroud and Wilson Andress each carded 77’s (+5) and Jay Spivey rounded out the score with a 6-over 78.

“Hats off to Brookstone,” Chase said. “They came and played some great golf. They were mentally prepared and had a great day.”

Evans Copeland and Walker Hinds paced Brookstone, each firing a 1-under 71.

In the girls match, the Lady Vikings totaled a score of 190, just two behind Stratford Academy, the 2016 Area Champions.

Cassidy Pearson and Bailey Good signed their scorecards at 93 and 97, respectively.

Stratford’s Ashlin Jackson was the girls low medalist with an 88.

The Lady Vikings will be joined by Savannah Christian and St. Anne Pacelli at Sectionals.

“Both of our teams fought hard today and I’m proud of their effort,” Chase said. “We know that Sectionals will be challenging, but we are also excited to still be playing golf at this point in the season.”
