Lady Vikings Hunt Down Prince Avenue Lady Wolverines 8-0 in First Round of GHSA State Tournament

MACON, Ga. – In the blink of an eye, it was 2-0 FPD.

Yes, indeed, less than two minutes into its GHSA Class-A Girls Soccer State Tournament first round match against Prince Avenue, FPD’s Emma Lako and Jansyn Samples each scored as the Lady Vikings (13-2-3) rolled to an 8-0 shutout over the Lady Wolverines (9-8-1) on Friday night, April 29 at the FPD Soccer Complex.

The victory puts FPD in the second round with a match-up against Savannah Christian, the no. 1 seed from Area-1, on Wednesday, May 4 at a time to be determined.

“We had a great week of practice and I think that was key,” FPD head coach Josh Trieste said. “We lost some tough matches last week and we addressed some offensive issues we had and it paid off for us tonight.”

After two goals in a 40-second span, the Lady Vikings used six more to close out the Lady Wolverines and advance.

Lako finished with four goals, three in the first period and one in the second, to pace the FPD offense. Jansyn Samples netted two scores while Maggie Johnston and Kennedy Cauley each added a goal as well.

“We worked on attacking all week and being aggressive with our shot selection ,” Trieste said.”I thought we came out pretty hungry to start this game.”

Lake certainly did, who scored her first of four goals at the 39:32 mark of the first period off a deflection in the box to make it 1-0 FPD.

After Samples scored at 38:52 on an assisted free kick by Elizabeth Nelson, Lako struck again with 28 minutes to play in the first half off a Maggie Johnston assist for a 3-0 Lady Viking advantage.

At the 12:50 point in the first period, Samples nailed home a penalty kick after being tripped in the box to make it 5-0 before Johnston closed out the first half with a goal off a cross assist by Sadie Frame to give the Lady Vikings a commanding 6-0 lead at intermission.

“I just thought we played awesome all the way around,” Lako said. “God blessed us with a lot of talent on this team and I thought we utilized it very well tonight.”

As for Lako scoring four times?

“The team played great tonight,” Lako said, giving her teammates much of the credit for her success. “They got me the ball when they thought I needed it and I was able to finish when I needed to.”

FPD out-shot Prince Avenue 30-7 in the match.

FPD keeper Caylee Ann Sutton picked up three saves in the win. Harrison Martin also corralled one save. Prince Avenue goalie Ashton Smith totaled four saves.

The Lady Vikings now shift their focus to Savannah Christian for Wednesday, May 4 in the second round.

“We played them last year and lost 1-0 when they poked in a corner kick,” Trieste said. “We had a lot of shots in that match and they had a really good goalkeeper.”

“But this time around we have to be a little more disciplined in the shots we’re taking and if we can create high percentage chances like we did tonight against Prince (Avenue), we’ll be fine against anybody.”
