Varsity Softball Releases 2016 Schedule

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity softball program and head coach Kristy Alvarez have released its 2016 schedule today, August 1, 2016.

“We are excited about our schedule this year,” Alvarez said, who took over the reigns of the program after long-time head coach Jim Turner stepped down in the off-season. “There are a lot of challenging games but we know in order to end up where we want to at the end of the season, that we have to play really good competition in order to get better (as a team).”

The Lady Vikings have certainly established themselves as one of the premier GHSA Class-A Private programs in the state.

Over the past three seasons, the Lady Vikings have advanced to the GHSA Class-A Private Elite Eight in Columbus, Ga. and finished third in the state each year dating back to 2013.

“Our girls want to go farther and want to get over that hump,” Alvarez said. “They have worked really hard this summer and are ready to get on the diamond.”

The Lady Vikings open the 2016 campaign on the road, visiting Bleckley County High School on Wednesday, August 10 for a 5 p.m. start.

FPD opens its home portion of the schedule on Saturday, August 13 with a double-header against Rutland High School at 10 a.m. followed by Perry High School at 2 p.m. The three-game home-stand will conclude on Monday, August 15 with Pike County High School visiting the FPD Softball Complex at 5:55 p.m.

From August 17-20, the Lady Vikings will compete in the Houston County Fall Brawl, with various games each day.

After a quick return home on August 23 against Northside at 5 p.m., FPD hits the road for two contests, first at Veterans High School on Thursday, August 25 at 5:55 p.m. followed by a trip to Bleckley County on Friday, August 26 at 5:30 p.m.

Region 7-A action opens for the Lady Vikings with two straight home games.

The Lady Vikings will host Mt. de Sales Academy on Sept. 1 and Wilkinson County High School on Sept. 6.

FPD will continue Region 7-A play on the road at Tattnall Square Academy on Sept. 8, at Stratford Academy on Sept. 13 and at Mt. de Sales on Sept. 15.

Sept. 16-17 will see the Lady Vikings head north to participate in the Gordon Lee Tournament, which showcases many of the best programs in the state. Opponents and game times will vary.

A home-away on Sept. 19 and 20 follows for the Lady Vikings. FPD will host Crawford County High School on Sept. 19 at 5 p.m. before traveling to Wilkinson County in Irwinton, Ga. to resume Region 7-A play at 5 p.m.

Three of the final four games of the regular season will be held at the FPD Softball Complex.

The Lady Vikings take on region rivals Tattnall Square on Sept. 22 and Stratford on Sept. 27. Veterans closes out the set on Sept. 28.

FPD’s final game of the regular season will be at Rutland on Sept. 29.

“Our girls are up for the challenge,” Alvarez said. “We know we have to take it one game at a time in order to get to where we want to be at the end of the season.”

The GHSA Class-A Region 7 Tournament begins Oct. 3-4 and the Region Championship is set for Oct. 6.

The GHSA Class-A Private State Tournament is set to start on Oct. 12-13.
