Softball Advances to State Championship with 5-3 Win Over Wesleyan

MACON, Ga. – The FPD Lady Vikings (30-5) defeated the Wesleyan Lady Wolves (29-5) 5-3 in the winner’s bracket final of the GHSA Class-A Private Elite 8 on Saturday morning, Oct. 29, to advance to the State Championship round for the first time in program history in the GHSA era.

FPD struck first against the Lady Wolves in the top of second when Amanda Evans scored on a Katie Culver fielder’s choice for a 1-0 lead.

But the Wolves bit back in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead. A FPD infield error scored Jennifer Nolan to tie the contest at 1-1.

Later in the inning, Wesleyan’s Jahni Kerr tripled to left field to score Jennifer Nolan to take a 2-1 lead.

But the Lady Vikings showed their resolve as the game progressed.

In the top of the fourth, the Lady Vikings plated two runs on a two-out 2-RBI single by Caylee Ann Sutton to bring home Carli Sutton and Katie Culver for a 3-2 FPD advantage.

The Lady Wolves tied the contest at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning on an error by the FPD infield to plate Cassie Henning.

But FPD punched back again the top of the seventh.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Abbey Surles sent a sharply hit ground ball down the third base line that stayed over the bag in fair territory to score Karsen Ochs and Emily Rutledge for a 5-3 lead.

Ochs (18-2) worked around a one-out single and retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to propel FPD into the title game.

Ochs allowed three runs, all unearned, and finished with six strikeouts in the winning bid.

Henning was tacked with the loss for Wesleyan, throwing a complete game with seven strikeouts.

FPD will play Wesleyan, Tattnall or Stratford at 3 p.m. on Field no. 1 at the South Commons Softball Complex on Saturday, Oct. 29 in the Championship.

The opposing team will need to beat the Lady Vikings twice, as FPD has not lost in the double-elimination tournament.
