Softball Closes Out Regular Season with 8-1 Win at Rutland, Streak to 15

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity softball team (23-3) closed out the 2016 regular season on a high note on Friday afternoon, defeating the Rutland Lady Hurricanes (12-14) 8-1 on the road in non-region play.

The victory improves FPD’s winning streak to 15, the longest in the program’s GHSA era. The Lady Vikings also finish the month of September unbeaten.

The Lady Vikings avenged an earlier season loss to the Lady Hurricanes as well, jumping out to a 4-0 lead at the end of the first inning.

Emily Rutledge singled home Cassie Sutton (courtesy running for Karsen Ochs) to give the Lady Vikings a 1-0 advantage.

Later in the inning, Amanda Evans smashed her ninth home run of the season, a three-run blast to score Rutledge and Whitney Sikes (courtesy running for Allie Parkerson).

FPD added another run in the top of the second when Rutledge doubled in Sadie Frame for a 5-0 lead.

After a scoreless third, the Lady Viking bats went back to work, scoring one run in fourth and fifth inning.

In the fourth, Gracie Slade came across on a wild pitch for a 6-0 lead and, in the fifth, Allie Parkerson connected on a solo home run to make it 7-0 Lady Vikings.

Parkerson wasn’t finished with the long ball, though.

In the top of the seventh, Parkerson blasted her second home run of the day and tenth of the season for an 8-0 lead.

Rutland plated one run in its final at bat when Bailey Calwell singled in Breasia Davis.

Karsen Ochs (14-1) picked up the win in the circle for FPD, tossing a complete game and striking out 13 batters.

FPD will enjoy the weekend off before opening up the GHSA Class-A Region-7 Tournament on Monday, Oct. 3 at the FPD Softball Complex.

The Lady Vikings, the no. 1 seed from the western division, will host the Lincoln County Lady Red Devils, the no. 4 seed from the east, at 4:30 p.m.
