Softball Drops GHSA Class-A Region 7 Tournament Championship to GMC Prep 4-1

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity softball team (25-4, 10-1 Reg. 7-A) saw its 17 game winning streak come to an end on Thursday night, falling to GMC Prep Lady Bullldogs (22-3, 12-0 Reg. 7-A) 4-1 in the GHSA Class-A Region 7 Tournament Championship game at the FPD Softball Complex.

After two scoreless innings, the Lady Vikings jumped out first with a Karsen Ochs solo home run to right center field to stake FPD to a 1-0 advantage.

But after a scoreless fourth frame, the Lady Bulldogs grabbed the lead for good.

In the top of the fifth, Kate McGhee led off the inning with a home run over the left field fence to tie the contest at 1-1.

Taylor Scott, who reached on a Lady Viking infield error, came in to score on a passed ball to give the Lady Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.

An inning later, McGhee struck again.

With Jordan Waller on second, McGhee hit her second home run of the game, this time over the center field wall, to give the Lady Bulldogs a 4-1 lead.

GMC starting pitcher Taylor Scott closed out the Lady Vikings over the final three innings to capture the title.

Carli Sutton (10-3) was charged with the loss for the Lady Vikings, allowing two runs while striking out seven. In relief, Ochs allowed two runs while striking out six batters.

With Thursday’s win, the Lady Bulldogs lead the all-time series against the Lady Vikings 8-1.

GMC is 3-0 in postseason play against FPD since 2012.

FPD will now await the final GHSA Class-A Private Power Ratings for seeding in State Tournament.

With the field expanding to 24 teams in 2016, FPD could draw a bye in the first round depending on how other regions finished and the order of the Class-A Private Power Ratings.
