Girls Hoops Drops Season Opener to Carver 60-53 at Stratford Tip-Off Classic

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity girls basketball team (0-1) fell in its season opener at the Stratford Academy Girls Tip-Off Classic to the Carver Lady Panthers (1-2) 60-53 on Monday afternoon, Nov. 21, at the Grady Smith Gymnasium.

The Lady Vikings led by four midway through the first quarter, but the Lady Panthers strung together an 8-0 run to end the first period up 14-12.

In the second quarter, the Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Vikings 15-7 to take a 29-19 lead into halftime.

FPD mounted a comeback in the third quarter, going up three with three minutes to play in the period.

But Carver answered with two big three-pointers from Angel Jackson and Jamia Brewer late in the quarter to withstand FPD’s run. Carver led 45-37 at the end of the third period.

The Lady Panthers answered the calling again in the fourth quarter, as the Lady Vikings outscored Carver 16-15.

Brewer paced all scorers with 19 points, including five 3-pointers. Jackson totaled 15 points and drained four from behind the arc.

The Lady Vikings were led by the 17 points and eight rebounds of Kate Patterson, who fouled out midway through the fourth period.

Emma Lako finished with 12 points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal in the losing bid.

Bailey Ruble hit two 3-pointers and finished with six points, seven rebounds, two steals and one block.

FPD’s misfortune came via the turnover. The Lady Vikings totaled 26 turnovers while assisting just 11 made shots.

With the loss, FPD and Carver are now tied 1-1 in the all-time series between the two schools. The Lady Vikings defeated the Lady Panthers last season at the Stratford Academy Tip-Off Classic.

The Lady Vikings close out the two-day tourney on Tuesday, Nov. 22, taking on the GMC Prep Lady Bulldogs.

Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. at Stratford.
