Lady Vikings, Vikings Sweep Bleckley County High School

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity girls and boys basketball teams took to the floor one last time before the Christmas break against the Bleckley County Lady Royals and Royals on Tuesday night, Dec. 13, at Coach Mac’s Court at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center.

In the girls contest, the Lady Vikings (5-2) came away with a 47-38 victory over the Lady Royals (3-5), snapping a quick one-game skid.

Kate Patterson paced FPD with 20 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, five steals and three blocks in the victory.

Bailey Ruble chipped with 10 points and seven rebounds while Emma Lako totaled nine points, five rebounds and two steals.

FPD trailed 14-10 at the end of the first quarter, but outscored the Lady Royals 11-3 in the second frame to take a 21-17 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Vikings answered a Lady Royal run in the third quarter, outscoring Bleckley County 16-15.

The Lady Vikings clamped down on defense over the final eight minutes, finishing the game on a 10-6 run to take the win.

In the boys match, the Vikings (3-2) and Royals (5-3) battled back and forth in the second half to a thrilling 56-53 victory for FPD in the night-cap.

The Vikings led 16-14 at the end of the first period and 29-25 at halftime.

But the Royals responded with a 15-11 run in the third quarter to tie the game at 40 heading into the final eight minutes of play.

Both teams traded punches, but none was bigger than from FPD’s Henry Middlebrooks.

Down 53-51 with 17 seconds to play, Middlebrooks received a pass from Armaun Smith in the corner and drilled a 3-pointer and was fouled. Middlebrooks made the free throw to give FPD a 55-53 advantage on the rare four-point play.

The Vikings then ran out the clock for the victory.

Middlebrooks finished with a game-high 26 points including five made 3-pointers.

Armaun Smith finished with 11 for the Vikings as well.

DJ Lemmon led the scoring charge for the Royals with 18 while Torenio Davis added 17 points.

The lead changed or was tied 15 times in the second half of the contest.
