Lady Vikings Fall in OT while Vikings Claim Region Victory at Stratford

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity girls and boys basketball teams split its Region 7 rivalry games on Tuesday night at The Grady Smith Gymnasium at Stratford Academy, with the Lady Vikings (13-5, 5-2 Reg. 7, 1A) falling to the Eaglettes 45-39 in overtime while the Vikings  (14-4, 6-1 Reg. 7, 1A) defeated the Eagles (9-9, 3-4 Reg. 7, 1A) 39-34.

In the girls contest, the Eaglettes outscored the Lady Vikings 8-2 in overtime to split the season series for a second straight year.

After a made layup by Emma Lako to give FPD a 39-37 lead, the Eaglettes ended the overtime period on a 8-0 run to claim the victory.

Stratford’s Nadia Reese tied the game at 39-39 after Lako’s layup followed by a 3-pointer by Evans McCook to take the lead for good.

Kate Patterson paced the Lady Vikings with 22 points and moved into sixth place on the all-time scoring list for FPD, passing Diane Graves (76-80). Patterson now has 1,136 career points.

Both squads were even at 10-10 at the end of the first period and FPD led at halftime 14-13.

The Eaglettes outscored the Vikings 18-17 in the third quarter but both teams scored just six points in the fourth period to force overtime.

Nadia Reese led Stratford with 18 points while McCook and Mary Elaine Mitchell each posted 10 points.

The Eaglettes capitalized from downtown, draining eight 3-pointers, with Reese and McCook combing for seven.

In the nightcap, the Vikings claimed its first season sweep over the Eagles since 2008 with a 39-34 triumph. FPD also pushed its winning streak to three games in the process.

The Vikings trailed 12-11 at the end of the first quarter and 24-19 at halftime.

The Eagle offense stalled in the third quarter, scoring no points, while the Vikings posted nine points for a 28-24 advantage going into the final frame.

The Vikings fended off the Eagles 11-10 in the final quarter to seal the victory.

Wesley Wilson led FPD with 12 points.

Stratford’s Tyler Jordan posted a game-high 20 points in the loss for Stratford.

The Lady Vikings and Vikings return to action on Friday, Jan. 27, traveling to Wilkinson County High School for another Region 7, Class 1A contest.

Tip-off for the varsity girls is slated for 6:30 p.m. with the varsity boys to follow at 8 p.m. in Irwinton, Ga. at The Palace.

The Lady Warriors defeated the Lady Vikings 37-29 back on Jan. 11 and the Warriors dropped the Vikings 66-56 at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center.
