Lady Vikings, Vikings Soar Past Stratford Academy Eagles

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity girls and boys basketball teams picked up victories over arch-rival Stratford Academy on Friday night, Jan. 6, at Coach Mac’s Court inside the Middlebrooks Athletic Center at FPD.

In the girls contest, the Lady Vikings (9-3, 2-0 Reg. 7, 1A), winner’s of two straight, defeated the Eaglettes (9-4, 1-1 Reg. 7, 1A) 24-13 behind a strong defensive effort.

The Lady Vikings held the Eaglettes scoreless in the first period to start the contest on a 7-0 run.

With offense at a premium, both squads managed just three points each in the second quarter and FPD led 10-3 at halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Vikings out-scored the Eaglettes 10-5, the two biggest shots of the period coming on two made 3-pointers by Bailey Ruble.

The Lady Vikings held on in the fourth period after being outscored 5-4 for the region victory.

Emma Lako led the Lady Vikings with eight points.

Mary Elaine Mitchell paced the Eaglettes with six points on two made 3-pointers.

In the nightcap, the Vikings (7-3, 2-0 Reg. 7, 1A) snapped an eight-game skid against their arch-rivals dating back to Feb. 1, 2008 (FPD won 63-50 at Stratford) with a 60-37 win over the Eagles (6-6, 1-1 Reg. 7, 1A).

The Vikings trailed 12-11 after the first period, but two 3-pointers late in the second quarter by Henry Middlebrooks led FPD to outscore Stratford 14-10 to give the Vikings a 25-22 lead at halftime.

The Vikings won the final two periods 12-10 and 23-15, respectively.

Maurice Gordon had a game-high 15 points for the Vikings, scoring in every quarter.

Teammates Caleb Kelly and Henry Middlebrooks each totaled 10 points in the win.

Nathan Hunt totaled 13 for Stratford while Christian Palmer netted 11 in the loss.

The Lady Vikings and Vikings return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 11, hosting the Wilkinson County Lady Warriors and Warriors in Region-7, 1A action.

Tip-off for the varsity girls game is schedule for 6 p.m. with the varsity boys to follow at 7:30 p.m. at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center.
