Baseball Opens 2017 Campaign with 6-4 Victory at Northside in Extra Innings

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. – It took eight innings, but the FPD varsity baseball team (1-0) picked up a 6-4 victory over the 6A Northside High School Eagles (2-1) in its 2017 season opener on Tuesday night, Feb. 14, at Dyson Field.

An error and a RBI single by Harrison Aulds in the top of the eighth put the Vikings ahead for good.

In the bottom half, Dylan Cox (1-0) picked up the win by retiring the final two batters on a strikeout and a ground out.

The Vikings led 2-0 after three innings of play.

Garrett West scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first and Ryan Jones singled home Michael Bakkar for a 2-0 advantage in the second.

In the sixth, FPD added a run to make it a 3-0 lead when West reached on an error by the Northside first baseman to plate Jones, who singled earlier in the inning.

The Eagles responded in a big way in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs to take a 4-3 lead.

Josh Card and Connor Bookout each had RBI singles followed by Alijah McGhee getting hit by a pitch to plate Darius Clarington.

Dylan Franks followed with a sacrifice-fly to bring in Card to take the lead at 4-3.

The Vikings answered in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 4-4.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Jones drew a free pass from Noah Walker to bring home Jackson McCart.

Noah Takac retired two straight before Cox came in to strike out Card to force extra innings.

The Vikings out-hit the Eagles 9-3 in the contest and forced Northside into committing five errors in the field.

Tuesday’s meeting was the first between Northside and FPD, putting the Vikings ahead 1-0 in the all-time series.

FPD returns to the diamond on Wednesday, Feb. 15, traveling to Perry High School.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. against the Panthers.
