Girls Soccer Claims Area-2 Title with 1-0 Victory Over Brookstone, Boys Fall 3-1

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity girls soccer team (16-0) defeated the Brookstone School Lady Cougars 1-0 on Thursday night, April 13, at the FPD Soccer Complex.

With the win, the Lady Vikings earn the 2017 GHSA Class-A Area-2 Title, the first since the 2015 season and fifth in the school’s GHSA era. (Altogether, the Lady Vikings have been crowned region champions eight times dating back to GISA play.)

A tight contest throughout, the Lady Vikings broke the scoreless barrier with three minutes to play in the match.

Lindsey Strickland drilled home the game-winning goal off a rebound to give FPD a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Viking offense held the Lady Cougars the final minutes of the match to take the win.

FPD held the shot advantage throughout the match totaling 14 while limiting the Lady Coougars to four.

Lady Viking keeper Caylee Ann Sutton snagged four saves in the winning bid. Brookstone goalie Ruth Hunter picked up three caroms.

FPD’s win also pushed the teams’ winning streak to 16 games. During the current span, the Lady Vikings have outscored opponents 152-1.

In the nightcap, the Vikings (8-5-3) dropped a 3-1 decision to the Cougars.

Noah Lyu accounted for FPD’s lone goal.

The Cougars spread the wealth on offense, with a goal each from Jack Jenkins, Hugh Page, and Jamie Sheek.

Brookstone won the shot battle 15-10.

Cougar keeper Henry Barnes grabbed 17 saves in the win.

The Lady Vikings and Vikings return to the pitch on Tuesday, April 18, hosting the Tattnall Square Academy Lady Trojans and Trojans at the FPD Soccer Complex on Senior Night.

Kickoff for the boys match is set for 5 p.m. with the girls to follow at 7:30 p.m. Senior Night ceremonies will take place between matches.
