Boys Golf Captures 2017 GHSA Class-A Private State Title

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The FPD varsity boys golf team captured the school’s first State Title in 1979 as a member of the GISA.

Fast-forward to 2017, and the same has happened again, albeit it be in a different league.

On Tuesday morning, the GHSA ruled that inclement weather would cancel the final round of the 36-hole State Tournament, thus reducing play to 18 holes.

And FPD stood in the right place at the right time at the conclusion of Monday’s opening round with a nine stroke lead.

With a team score of 289, the Vikings were awarded the 2017 GHSA Class-A Private State Championship on Tuesday morning, May 23, posting a team score of 289, good for 5-over par at Green Island Country Club.

Brookstone finished as the Runner-Up, posting a 298 (+14) on their home course.

Mount Paran (302), Holy Innocents’ (306) and Athens Academy (308) round out the top five team scores.

Battling rain and weather delays on Monday, the Vikings still came through in the clutch.

Luke Dasher led the Vikings with a 1-under 70.

Wilson Andress finished with a 1-over 72, while Wesley Hanson carded a 2-over 73.

FPD’s final counting score came via Jay Spivey, who finished at 3-over-par for a 74.

The boys golf State Title is the third for the 2016-17 academic year for FPD.

The varsity softball team picked up its first GHSA State Championship and the Clay Target Shooting Team was awarded the GISA General Division State Championship.

FPD will honor the varsity boys golf team at a ceremony on Wednesday morning, May 24 at 10:15 a.m. after the last final exam has taken place.

More information on FPD’s State Championship will be forthcoming on www.fpdvikings.com, @FPDVikingSports on Twitter and FPD Athletics on Facebook.
