Viking Wrestling Looks To Continue Success Saturday In Sectionals

Over the last few weeks Viking Wrestling has turned it into high gear as they make their final push to the Macon Centreplex, the home of the GHSA Traditional Wrestling Championships which will take place starting Friday February 9th.

The Vikings, had a strong showing at the Bibb County Championships which were held at Rutland High School. As a team in they would finish 2nd overall behind the strong individual performances of Andrew Cohen (1st-132lbs), Wyatt Wilson (1st-195lbs), Matt Rose (2nd-113), Kaleb Black (2nd – 170), Josh Raines (2nd – 182), Ty Turley (2nd – 220), Harrison Bonfim (3rd-126), and Phillip Carlton (3rd – 160).  “The guys got after them pretty good,” said Head Coach Ken Garvin following his team’s performance prior to the Area Tournament at Strong Rock Christian.

Last Saturday January 26th, at Strong Rock the Vikings continued their success on the mat.  At the Area Tournament in order to advance to the GHSA Sectionals the wrestler must finish in the top 4 and the Vikings had five wrestlers advance, and three more will be alternates for their weight class in the event of an illness, or other disqualification that will be decided early Saturday morning February 3rd during the weigh-in. Thomas Anthony and Josh Raines both finished runner-up in their weight classes of 152 and 182 to advance. The other three Viking Wrestlers to advance all placed fourth in their weight class Phillip Carlton (160), Seth Wilson (195), and Ty Turley (220). The three alternates who placed in the top six were Matt Rose (113), Harrison Bonfim (126), and Andrew Cohen (132).

All of the wrestlers will be returning home this Saturday as FPD is hosting the GHSA Sectionals for the first time in its history which begin at nine o’clock. To advance to the championships at The Macon Centreplex the wrestler must finish in the top four in their weight class. The task will not be easy by any means as the top wrestlers in Class-A from across the state of Georgia will be competing, but with the recent success of these Viking Wrestlers they should be confident against any opponent they wrestle as they compete to advance to the championship.
