Football Wins First GHSA Playoff Game in School History Over Brookstone

COLUMBUS, Ga.- In 2011, the First Presbyterian Day School football team accomplished a first in school history by making it to the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Class A State Playoffs. The excitement faded into disappointment, however, as FPD fell to Bremen in its first round game.

The coaches and players continued to work to prepare for the upcoming 2012 campaign.

Now just one year later, the 2012 Vikings (7-4) have accomplished yet another first in school history: winning a playoff game as a member of the GHSA, this time a 49-33 decision on the road at the #4 seeded Brookstone School.

Darron Moore rushed for four touchdowns and quarterback Brooks Stroud returned from a concussion suffered toward the end of the season to lead the Vikings to victory.

FPD set the tone on the second play from scrimmage when Alec Martin threw to Scott McCormick for a 61-yard score on a half-back pass to lead 7-0 just 42 seconds into the game.

The Vikings struck again with just under six minutes left in the first quarter when Darron Moore scored the first of his four touchdowns on the night from 12 yards out to give the Vikings a 14-0 advantage.

Moore scored again with 3:55 remaining in the first quarter from three yards out to give FPD a 21-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Reggie Gannt rushed for a three yard score to put FPD up 28-0 with 6:09 to play in the first half.

Brookstone got on the board less than a minute later when Madison McCluskey rushed for a 53-yard touchdown to make it 28-7.

The Vikings and Cougars would exchange scores, one from FPD’s Moore and the other from Brookstone’s McCluskey to end the second quarter and send the Vikings into the locker room up 35-14.

In the second half, Brookestone scored within the first two minutes when Duncan Fletcher connected to Tim Kennedy. The extra point was no good and FPD led 35-20.

The Cougars scored again late in the third quarter when Fletcher found McCluskey for a one-yard shovel pass to bring the Cougars within eight at 35-27.

In the fourth quarter, the Viking offense rose to the occasion, using the back of Moore from 40 yards out to score and lead 42-27 with 9:17 to play.

Brookstone answered just two minutes later, when McClsukey caught a six yard pass. Kaleb Fuller blocked the PAT, however, and FPD still led 42-33.

Senior quarterback Brooks Stroud ran in a 10-yard score to seal the win for the Vikings and secure a spot in round two of the GHSA Class A Football State Playoffs, another first in school history.

Moore paced the Vikings on the ground, running for 198 yards on 22 carries and scoring four times. Stroud also ran for 105 yards on 21 tries while Will Black rushed for 43 yards on 12 carries.

McCormick led the team in receiving, hauling in two passes for 76 yards and one touchdown.

The Viking offense tallied 425 yards of total offense on the evening with 349 coming via the run. FPD picked up 19 first downs in the contest, 17 coming from the rush as well.

Brookstone accumulated 374 yards of total offense, 217 coming from the arm of Fletcher. Kennedy, McCluskey and Leye Olubewale all combined for 150 yards receiving.

With the win the Vikings will travel to play at Landmark on Friday, November 30. Landmark, last years Class A State Runner-Up, most recently defeated Calvary Day 10-7 on November 23. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

The First Presbyterian Day School Department of Athletics, home to multiple region and state championships in both the GISA and GHSA, strives to build the student athlete both in the playing arena and the classroom while continuing to educate and equip students to change the world for God’s glory.
