Baseball Winning Streak Reaches 17 with Win Against Westside at Luther Williams

MACON, Ga. – With Saturday’s game against Veterans High School at Turner Field looming ahead, First Presbyterian Day School head baseball coach Jim Turner knew it would be a good idea to play in a ballpark that offers a similar atmosphere the players will encounter in Atlanta.

Turner asked Westside High School if they would play Wednesday’s scheduled contest at Luther Williams Field in downtown Macon, the former home of the Macon Braves, a Class A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves.

Westside obliged and both teams graced the field that has seen some of the greatest in the game, including Pete Rose, Chipper Jones, and Andruw Jones.

“The opportunity to play at Luther Williams Field was great for us in order to prepare for the dimensions of Turner Field on Saturday,” Turner said.

The Vikings (17-0) showed they are ready for Saturday’s challenge, defeating Westside 11-4 and winning its 17th consecutive game.

FPD lead 5-4 heading into the top of the seventh inning. With the bases loaded, senior Tanner Johnston smashed a triple to left-center to clear the bases and give the Vikings an 8-4 advantage.

The Vikings outhit the Seminoles 7-3 and forced Westside into committing five errors on the night.

Sam Jones (5-0) recorded the victory for FPD on the mound. Sam Joyce also homered in the contest, a two-run home run in the first inning.

The First Presbyterian Day School Department of Athletics, home to multiple region and state championships in both the GISA and GHSA, strives to build the student athlete both in the playing arena and the classroom while continuing to educate and equip students to change the world for God’s glory.
