Baseball Drops Game Three to Darlington to End 2013 Season

MACON, Ga. – In a game that saw the tension of a winner-take-all scenario unfold, the First Presbyterian Day School baseball team did everything in its power to pull through in the end but it wasn’t enough as the Darlington Tigers took Game 3 of the series 7-4 to advance to the GHSA State Semifinals.

The loss brings an end to the 2013 season for the Vikings (23-3).

Down 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning, sophomore Austin Cox provided hope that FPD would advance, drilling a go-ahead two-run single to left field to give the Vikings a 4-3 lead.

That lead was short-lived, however. The Tigers clawed back to score four runs in the bottom half of the sixth, including a two-run double by Drake Frix to give Darlington the advantage for good.

The Tigers struck first, plating two runs in the first inning and added another run in the second frame when Breck Tillery scored on a wild pitch.

The Vikings scored in the third inning when senior Tanner Johnston walked with the bases loaded to bring in fellow senior Josh Weaver.

FPD would chip away again in the fifth, scoring on a Sam Joyce RBI-single to make it a 3-2 contest in favor of Darlington.

Starting pitcher Hunter Hotchkiss allowed three runs in the no-decision effort, two of which were earned, and struck out three batters. Kevin Moreau (5-2) took the loss in relief.

Darlington outscored FPD 17-14 and outhit the Vikings 20-19 in the series.

The 2013 season was a memorable one for the Vikings. FPD claimed the Region 7-A Championship, set a new school record for consecutive wins to start a season, played at Turner Field and advanced to the second round of the GHSA State Playoffs.

The FPD Athletic Department sincerely thanks the class of 2013 for their efforts and dedication over the years.

The First Presbyterian Day School Department of Athletics, home to multiple region and state championships in both the GISA and GHSA, strives to build the student athlete both in the playing arena and the classroom while continuing to educate and equip students to change the world for God’s glory. Now a member of the GHSA, the Vikings have continued to provide FPD athletes, coaches, fans and spectators a positive, Christian environment on a daily basis.
