Baseball Splits First Two Games with Darlington; Series Moves to Game 3

MACON, Ga. – The First Presbyterian Day School Vikings hit the diamond on Wednesday afternoon, May 8 for the first two games of a best-of-three-game-series against The Darlington School Tigers knowing that two wins would get them to the semifinal round of the GHSA Class A State Playoffs.

Those hopes are put on hold momentarily as the Vikings (23-2) and Darlington split the opening games of the series.

FPD took the first game 10-0 while Darlington won the nightcap 7-3.

Game Three of the series is set for Thursday, May 9 at 3 p.m. at Ben Harden Field on FPD’s campus.

“This is going to be a great end to what has already been a great series,” FPD head coach Jim Turner said.

Game Two saw Darlington fight for its playoff life. The Tigers posted three runs in second innings and three in fourth inning to seal the win.

Darlington out-hit FPD 9-2 in Game Two despite committing three errors.

Burton Dulaney was the winning pitcher for Darlington, tossing a complete game, striking out 12 batters and walking none.

Playing as the home team in Game One, the Vikings jumped to an early 5-0 lead in the second inning. Senior Sam Joyce cleared the bases on a three-run double to put FPD ahead for good.

“It was a team effort,” Joyce said. “We all hit the ball well.”

The five run cushion proved to be plenty for starting pitcher Kevin Moreau (5-1). The southpaw tossed the complete-game shutout, struck out seven batters and allowed just two hits on the night. Furthermore, Moreau threw 14 first-pitch strikes to the 21 batters-faced in the game.

“He (Moreau) pitched within himself and didn’t try to throw too hard,” Turner said. “He was very successful because of that.”

FPD would add four more runs in the fifth to seal the win. Senior Hunter Hotchkiss smashed a double to left field to score Joyce to give the Vikings a 6-0 lead.

After a Darlington error and a FPD walk, senior Josh Weaver stepped in and drilled a double to left field to score three more runs to put FPD ahead 9-0.

The Vikings clinched the game in the sixth on a Tanner Johnston RBI single, enough for the 10-run-rule to take effect.

“We just have to come out and swing the bats tomorrow (Thursday),” Joyce said. “If we stay mentally tough we’ll be alright.”

The First Presbyterian Day School Department of Athletics, home to multiple region and state championships in both the GISA and GHSA, strives to build the student athlete both in the playing arena and the classroom while continuing to educate and equip students to change the world for God’s glory. Now a member of the GHSA, the Vikings have continued to provide FPD athletes, coaches, fans and spectators a positive, Christian environment on a daily basis.
