Football Announces Staff Changes for the 2013 Season

MACON, Ga. – The First Presbyterian Day School football program and head coach Greg Moore has announced multiple coaching staff changes for the upcoming 2013 season.

Rennie Atkinson, who previously served as the school’s defensive coordinator, will step into an Associate Athletic Director role for the 2013-14 school year.

“I’m really excited about Rennie’s new position and all of the positives he will bring to our Athletic administrative office,” Moore said. “I hate to lose him on the field, but the experience he has as a former Athletic Director and educator will prove to be a great resource for all of our coaches and our Athletic Department’s ever-growing service to our school family.”

Moving into the defensive coordinator position will be Ken Garvin, who also serves as the head wrestling coach for the school.

“Ken studies the game, he works long hours in preparation, and he is a good teacher of the game,” Moore said. “I don’t have any question he will be successful as our defensive coordinator, a position he has held before in his career.”

FPD’s special teams will also get a new look this year, with Seth Boyett being named Special Teams Coordinator.

“Seth’s done a tremendous job for us, and adding the special teams to his plate makes good sense,” Moore said. “Special teams is a big part of any football team’s success, and getting someone in that position to make it a high priority for us will pay off.”

The final change for the FPD football coaching staff for 2013 is the addition of community coach Michael Walton.

Walton was a former three-sport standout athlete at Mt. deSales and later played collegiate basketball at Rice University in Houston, TX.

“I’m excited about getting Michael on board with us. He was a great competitor in high school and college, and it will be nice to have him on our team, instead of always trying to figure out how to stop him,” Moore said. “I’m looking forward to seeing his impact on our team – it will be very positive for sure.”

The FPD football team finished the 2012 season 7-5 and advanced to the second round of the GHSA State Playoffs, winning its first playoff game in school history as a member of the league.

The Vikings kickoff the 2013 season on Friday, August 30, taking on the George Walton Academy Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. at George S. Johnson Stadium.

The First Presbyterian Day School Department of Athletics, home to multiple region and state championships in both the GISA and GHSA, strives to build the student athlete both in the playing arena and the classroom while continuing to educate and equip students to change the world for God’s glory. Now a member of the GHSA, the Vikings have continued to provide FPD athletes, coaches, fans and spectators a positive, Christian environment on a daily basis.
