Daniel Strawn Named Macon Telegraph Boys Tennis Player of the Year

MACON, Ga. – Head tennis coach Derek Lashley knew leaving the Camden County Tournament in February that he had a special team – a squad that carried many players full of talent.

One of those athletes has now been named The Macon Telegraph boys tennis Player of the Year for his efforts in leading the Vikings to a GHSA Class A State-Runner Up finish in late May.

Senior Daniel Strawn, who will play collegiately at Clemson beginning in 2013 , was awarded the honor on Friday, June 7.

“He (Daniel) was more than just a fantastic leader,” Lashley said. “He came in with a lot of expectations and delivered both on and off the court.”

Strawn’s play throughout his senior season was perfect. The lefty compiled a 21-0 record despite not finishing his match in the State Championship against The Walker School.

It’s Strawn’s attitude, though, that Lashley was most impressed with.

“He would coach from the bench and cheer on the boys and the girls,” Lashley said. “The atmosphere will help him at Clemson.”

Along with Strawn’s accolades, the Vikings also placed five others on the All-Middle Georgia Boys Tennis Team.

Michael Durham and Miller Durham earned spots on the first team while Max Chandler, Brooks Hanson, Tristan Hilyer and Dylan Liles nabbed Honorable Mention.

Lashley will cherish the success of the 2013 team for quite some time. But, he knows that sooner than later, it will be time to get back to work.

“We’re excited about the future of our tennis programs,” Lashley said. “We know we have to work very hard next season to get back to where we left off.”
