Softball Rolls Past Northside in Home Opener

MACON, Ga. – Head coach Jim Turner has been concerned with the hit production over the past week for the First Presbyterian Day School softball team.

But those worries were quickly put to rest on Tuesday night, August 27, as the Lady Vikings (4-4) rolled past the Northside Lady Eagles 15-3 in four innings to win its 2013 home opener.

FPD pounded out a dozen hits en route to the victory, snapping a three-game losing skid in the process.

“We had great fan support tonight,” Turner said. “And the ladies were really excited to come out here and play.”

Junior Sumner Carlton was a key to the success FPD had at the plate.

The lefty accounted for three RBI’s, including a triple in the third inning that saw the Lady Vikings plate 12 runs.

“It was a great win because we have been struggling hitting over the last few games,” Carlton said. “It was good to finally get the bats out and get a bunch of runs.”

Freshman pitcher Carli Sutton (4-2) continued her masterful pitching in the circle, holding the Lady Eagles to three runs, all of which were unearned.

“She (Carli) located everything and kept us in the game early in some key situations,” Turner said.

But it was the outpour of offense that was the spark.

Carlton, Emily Rutledge and Katherine Strickland combined for nine RBI’s. Five different players had a hit and nine players scored at least one run.

It’s a trend that Carlton hopes will continue as the season progresses.

“We have to keep hitting,” Carlton said. “We have to make sure we are fielding grounders and be fast on defense.”

FPD returns to the diamond on Wednesday, August 28, traveling to play the Perry Lady Panthers. First pitch is scheduled for 5:55 p.m. as the Lady Vikings look to rebound from a 1-0 loss to Perry earlier this year on August 23.
