Softball Wins at Perry in Extra Innings

PERRY, Ga. – Head coach Jim Turner says to win a game it boils down to one fundamental: execution.

And that’s exactly what the First Presbyterian Day School softball team did in extra innings on Wednesday night, August 28, to earn its second win in as many days, a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the Perry High School Lady Panthers.

With two strikes and two outs in the eighth, junior Sumner Carlton singled to score senior Mary Micah Lee. Freshman Carli Sutton (5-2) held the Lady Panthers at bay in the bottom half to secure the win.

“This is a huge win for us,” Turner said. “We’ve been working on executing in practice over the past week and it has started to pay off.”

Perry took the lead quickly, scoring twice in the first inning.

The Lady Vikings (5-4) responded with a run in the second on a Maggie Renfroe double and added a score in the third on a sacrifice fly from Katherine Strickland to even the contest a 2-2.

The game would head into extra innings as neither team could plate a run at the end of regulation.

FPD took the lead in the seventh inning on a fielder’s choice by Caitlin Collins, but it was short-lived. Perry deadlocked the game on Sammy Gidney single that scored Sabrina Doucette.

That set the stage for Carlton’s heroics in the eighth inning.

“She (Sumner) really focused in on the at-bat,” Turner said. “She did a great job staying on the pitch.”

Turner also hopes the big plays keep coming.

“We’ve had a lot of players step up over the past few games,” he said. “We’ve got to keep doing that.”

FPD returns to the diamond on Tuesday, September 3, traveling to play Veterans at 5:55 p.m.

The First Presbyterian Day School Department of Athletics strives to build the student athlete both in the playing arena and the classroom while upholding the school’s mission statement to educate and equip students to change the world for God’s glory as a member of the Georgia High School Association.
