Softball Advances to Elite Eight

MACON, Ga. – The FPD softball team (20-8) defeated the Athens Christian Lady Eagles (18-18) in two games (6-3, 5-3) in its best-of-three series to advance to the GHSA Class-A Elite Eight on Wednesday night, Oct. 23 at the FPD Softball Complex.

Courtney Lawrence smashed a 2-run home run in Game One and racked up five RBI’s on the night to lead the Lady Vikings to its first trip to the Elite Eight in school history, set to begin on Thursday, Oct. 31.

“We stayed focused throughout the entire game,” Lawrence said. “This will be the first time we’ve ever made it to Columbus, so we are excited. We were able to execute in both games to pull through.”

Head coach Jim Turner agrees.

“Everyone chipped in,” Turner said. “We put a lot of people in position to score and to get RBI’s.”

The Lady Vikings took Game One 6-3 behind the offensive power of Lawrence while pitcher Carli Sutton and the FPD defense escaped some key jams.

“Game one was big because it helped set the tone,” Turner said. “We got several clutch hits, pitches and defense when we needed it. Courtney’s homer really opened the door for us.”

FPD played as the visitor in Game Two, winning 5-3 and clinching the series.

“We scored two in the first inning,” Turner said. “That was huge to put Carli out there with the lead early. We kept tacking on (runs), people had great bunts and the ladies kept driving them in.”

Lawrence is proud of the team for its accomplishments thus far and excited about the opportunities that are ahead.

“As long as we stay focused, keep executing and play hard, we will be okay,” Lawrence said.

Added Turner on advancing to the Elite Eight: “This is what we’ve been trying to do the last four years with these girls and thankfully we were able to get it done this year.”

FPD will begin Elite Eight tournament action against Brookstone on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 10:30 a.m. The Lady Cougars defeated Calvary Day in two games 9-1 and 5-3 to advance, respectively.
